« Wanganui v. Manawatu.
The above match eventuated on Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Ground. Thoro was only a fair attendance considering the splendid afternoon. The Manawatu reps were driven to the Ground in Smilay's brake, the following being their team :— Roach, full-back ; Leys, A. Duncan, and Jewell, tbroe-quarters ; Shannon and K. Duncan, halves ; Woon, J. Cameron, Maltravers, Aldworth, Mathieson, Weston, Balltntine, Prendergast, and North, forwards. The team picked to do battle for Wanganui was the same as previously published in these columnsTho game commenced at 2 35 by MoLean kicking off for the blues (Wanganui) and Koach (Manawatu) promptly returned into touch. Aftor some loose play in the reds 25*s, during which tbe blues were gradually working tho ball up to the reds goal lino, tho reds got on a good passing rush which O'Leary stopped by a good punt into touch. Tho red forwards, were, however, not to be denied, their passing rushes boing vory much admired, and they carried tho leather into a dangerous position. From a scrum in front of the blues' goal K. Duncan essayed a pass but it was nicely intercepted by Mofoan, who greatly relieved his side by a good run up to the half-way flag. Some good dashing runs wore made by Leys und Duncan, but they were grasspd in line style by O'Leary and McLean. Shannon obtained a mark in the blues' 25's and Jewell took a shot at goal but it did not come off, and a force down resulted. From tho kick out things " hummed " a bit, the ball travelling up and the field with great force Riddle, Mildenhall andPatterson boing conspicuous for the blues and K. Duncan, Maltravers and Weston for tho rods. A freo-kick was given to the reds about tho half-way. E, Woon, taking tho kick, punted high, and Mason failing to return Aldworth, by good following up, secured possession of the ball and dropped across tho line, thus securing first blood for Manawatu j no goal resulted, Tbe Wanganuis then assumed tho aggressive, and Mason, from a free kick placed a splendid goal, Soon aftor half-time was called, and the soore remained — Wanganui 3, Manawatu 2. Tho socond spell was more evenly contoited. First one side then the other having tho advantage Jewell marked near the centre flag »nd punted high up the fiold, but tho Blues backs were evidently waiting for each other to take up tbo ball, which wai mulled inconsequence, and Woon following up fast gained possession and soored a " soft " try. Tho kick at goal was successful, and the score stood— Manawatu 7, Wanganui 3. Well on towards the end of the game tho Blues got on a sweeping rush, whioh carried all before them, and McLean obtaining possession passed to Symes, who promptly potted, and kicked, what seemed an unmistakable goal, but, however, the referee, to the surprise of all, ruled otherwise. The game ended without further score, and tho Manawatus wero therefore victorious by 7 points to 3. Mr Thompson was very impartial as referee.
