Waitotara County Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held this morning there being present— Crs Peat, Mitchell, Kitchie, Perry, Wright, Tawae, Thatcher, and Robertson. The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, a letter was read from J. and W. Jamieson asking to be allowed to take gravel at Castlecliff. It was moved by Mr lhatoher, seconded by Mr Ritchie and carried, that the contractor for the freezing works be allowed to take what gravel he rnqmred from tho unexcavated part of the road line at Castlecliff at 6d per yard unscreened.
A letter was also received from tho Commissioner of Crown Lands r« roods to Kangitatau and other blocks.
The Foreman's report as read was adopted. It was moved by Cr. Robertson seconded by Cr. Mitchell and carried, That Costagen'a tender for 69 subject to Dempsoy and Leary depositing money for 70 and 71 contracts be accepted.
KeeoWed on the motion of Cr. Robertson, seconded by Cr. Thatcher, that it be a recommendation to the new Council that the re-adjustment of the Biding boundaries demands their early attention. Moved by Cr Thatcher, se.onded by Cr Pern, and carried — that all dogs except thoso defined as sheep and cattle dogs in tha Registration Act, 1890, be registered for the ensuing year at a fee of 10s, tho registration office to be the office of tho Waitotara County, and that J. Coakley be appointed Collector at the rate of 2s each for 10s dogs, and 6d for 2s 6d dogs. Accounts to the amount of £74 19s 8d were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
The barque Crummock Water, which left Port Pirie on June 30, is posted at Lloyd's as overdue.
It is announced that Sir Harry Atkinson will iseue hia political manifesto on Wednesday. The party has already melted away.
The Town Clerk having forwarded to tho Government analyst a sample of the tapioca connected with the late poisining cases, has received the following wire : -Tapioca contains areenio in such proportions as to be dangerous as food." The analysis will be forwarded hero shortly.
The annual district meeting of the members o£ tho Ancient Order of Foresters belonging to the Wellington Forestry district was held on Thursday in the Foresters' Hall, Tory-street, when the following officers, were then appointed Tor the ensuing year : Bro. H. G. Mills, D.S.C.B.i Bro. A. Whiteford, Treasurer, (re-elected) j and Bro. H. B reh, Secretary. A largo number of delegates were present from lodges up country, and also from aoross the strait, and the business, which was not concluded until a late hour, was regarded by tho brethern ■ present as being eminently satisfactory. In commemoration of the annual district meeting, a tmoke concert was held in the evening in the Foresters' Hall, Tory-street, at »t which upwards of 100 members of the Order and guests were present. The chair was occupied by JJro. J.Leadbeater, D C.R . the vice-chairs being filled by Bro. H. G. Mills, D.5.0.8., and Bro W. H. Dobson, D. B. Toasts and songs followed each other in rapid succession, and an exceedingly pleasant evening was paiied. Speeches oulogistic of Forestry and kindred societies were delivered, the most notable utterances being thoie of Bros. G. Fisher, Robinson, and H. Birch (District Secretary). The latter gentleman in tho course of his remarki mentioned that the Order throughout the world numbered 700,000 members, with 76,000 members of iuvenilo lodges. The average yearly increase to the ranks of Foresters was 12,000. The numborof momben in the Wellington district was 2123, the value of tho district funds amounting W £?7,000.
