We would remind our readers of tho social gathering of the Ladies' Working Guild which is to be held in the Chriat Chnrch Schoolroom this evening. The programme will consist as follows : — Pianoforte duets by Miss Dickson and Mr Blackett, Tocal solos by Jlesdames Empson, Borlase •nd Barnicoat, Misses Enderby, Battle, Martin and Pawson, Messrs Manning, Fairburn, Maclean and Wilson, and a reading by Mr Andrews, of the Collegiate School. Tho funeral of tile late Mrs Ounnaboll took place this morning, the cortege moving from Trinity Wesleyan Churon and proceeding to the Wanganui Cemetery whore the deceased lady was interred alongside the remains of her lato husband. The arrangements in connection with the obesquies were carried out by Mr H. A. Arthur ofPatea. The production of "Patience " at the Oddfellowt' Hall on the Bth and 9th instant is being awaited with a considerable amount of interest by local amateurs, for the opera itself abounds in some beautiful music, tho dialogue is good, and costumes ecsthetic in the extreme. Mr Sparks, who bas been coaching the performers for sometime, is very sanguine, and well pleased with the efforts of all. The cast of characters has been evenly distributed, Patience being in the hands of IMrsPerrin (wee Miss Sparks) ; Bunthorne will be played by Mr Baker, and tho Duke by Mr Haig, while Miss Helgeson will es<ay the part of the portly Lady Jane. The orchestra will consist ot twelve picked instrumentalists, and tho scenery is being expressly painted by Mr Battle. The Taranaki Herald, referring to a stick race and bare hunt held on June 27, saj s :
— Much greater interest was manifested in the second meeting of sportsmen at Westhan in the previous one, as was evidenced by the number of horsemen who assembled at the post. The fun too was much better and moie exciting, and on the whole the spectators had a good time of it. No accidents were recorded, although three or four got croppers in the hare hunt. The " stick race," for which )8 started, six in each beat, is rather a novel race. There were seven jumps, and on the other side of six of these, six pegs with coloured flags attached wero stuck in tho ground. Each horseman on jumping hud to dismount and pick up his peg, a certain color being ullotcd him, and the one who camo in with nil his flags in his possession was declared the winner. <
