U.B.C. Annual Meeting.

Monday, October 7th, 1889.

The annual meeting of the U.B.C. waa held at the Commercial Hotel, at which there were present— Messrs F. M. Spurdle (President), in the chair, R. Hughes (captain), C. Poynfcer (secretary), W. Rodwell (treasurer), Howard, Ramson, J. Pawson, Hackett, Saunders, Barr, McLaren, I. Crichton, Oliver, Tasker, Percival, Sykes, Murray, Giblin, Carroll, Wilson, Morton, Quin, Spurdle, Rankin, W. Pawson, Chalk, Davenport, Kruse, Mahoney, Gray, Bennet, Keegan, and Townsend.

The annual report, which has already been published in theao columns, waa read by the Secretary, and Mr Rodwell read the balance-sheet. The statement of assets and liabilities showed the latter as £78 6s 6d, and the assets were £308 3a. On the Aramoho shed account the liabilities aro £34 3s 7d and the assets £67.

The President congratulated fche Club on its healthy condition, the overdraft, " which is the true test of a Club's vitality," having been greatly reduced during tho year. He had no doubt but thafc if good crpws were chosen a better account would be given this 'year than last at the various regattas. After alluding to thejplant and tho pontoon, Mr Spurdle referred to the healthy state of things as shown by the small amount of subs, outstanding, ihe opening of a branch at Aramoho had been an important event during the jear, and ho thought there waa every prospect) of a succeaaful issue to the project as there were a number of athletic young men up in that locality. He hoped the two branches would pull together to maintain the prestige of the TJ.B.C.

The report being adopted tho election of officers came next with the following results : — President, Mr F. M. Spurdle (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Aiken and i . T. Stewart (re-elected). Mr Spuedle before calling for nominations for 1 apfcain alluded to the unfortunate resignation of Mr Bates, and said that the position had since been filled ably by Mr Hughes, who was proposed again by Mr Howard and seconded by Mr Davenport, and elected without opposition. Deputy - captains, Messrs Eoclwell and Carroll (Aramoho branch). Secretary — Mr Poyntor was proposed by the president, who paid him a very high tribute, and Mr Hackett seconded the nomination, but he declined, and proposed as his successor Mr Ramson, who was then elected. Por the Aramoho branch Mr Murray was elected as secretary ; treasurer, Mr Rodwell ; committee, Messrs Poynter, Howard, W. Pawson, Haokett, Saunders, Keegan, Tasker, Gray, Giblin, Sykes, Davenporfc, Kruse, Mahoney, andTownsend were proposed.of whom Messrs Poynter,Howord,Saunders,Pawson,Hackett, Kruse, and Gray wero elected. Messrs Haokefct, Poynter, and Carroll were elected as a selection committee, and Mr (Juin as custodian.

Next came a discussion on a proposal to increase the honorary membew' subs., Mr Poyhter pointing oufc that it was necessary for financial reasons to increase the sum. Mr Rodwell supported the motion on the 1 same grounds, but objected to the abolition of the entrance fee. The resolution was carried, but it was understood that this was not to apply to the Aramoho branch for this year. As to working members' subs., the captain objected to any increase for this year, and Mr Hughes proposed that the committee should consider whether the I working fees be raised from 20s so 30s. Carried. A vote of thanks to the retiring officers was accorded on the motion of Mr Ramson. It was decided to arrange with the W.R.C. for the opening of the season, and also for the official opening of the Aramoho shed.
