FBIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1888. SALE OF LAND. ♦ Tub salo of land at Waitotara on Tuesday shows an .unusual demand, stimulated by high prices of produce and the looking up of fanning operations generally. Tho quantity disposed of waa a mere sop— 10,000 aercß divided into 29 sections, 'Icn -times the quantity would probably have been taken up, and as thero is a large area still available thero is no reason why tho domand should nob at onco be satisfied. Tho Kaimanufcu Block adjoins tho land sold, and consists of about 30,000 acres, which would find applicants in moderate sections. If there is a demand for land, it would bo folly to hold it back, and there is at least 100,000 acres boliind Waitotara which could bo promptly settled. The Xaitangawhenua Block of 100,000 acres is suitable for small runs 1000 to 5000 acres each, and if the upset prico woro low they would bo eagerly competed for. Bo.' ferring further to tho sale which has taken place, it will bo seen that there was a very largo number of applicant* who could not get any land, while ono applicant was able to acquiro several soctions, This is wrong. The widest distribution of the land ought to be tho policy of tho colony. If thero aro two applications for two sections, it is opposed to progress to allow both sections to be obtained by ono porson. We cast no censuro on any individual when ho complies with tho law j but the law itself requires amendment.
