A young man named Herbert Henderson got a months' hard labour, without the option of a fine, for an unprovoked assault on a country visitor. Defendant was on ball awaiting trial at the Supreme Court for robbery, with violence.
Complaints have reoently been made of annoyonoe to passengers in the trains through the use of obscene language, and to-day the magistrate made an example of Thomas Walsh, who got four weeks for striking guard and behaving in a violent manner, and was fined 4Os, with £3 costs, for using obsoene language, imprisonment in default.
The house of T. MoNalty was burned down thia morning, The furniture was insured for £100, a .d the house for £200, both in the Now Zealand Coraptny. Petitions are in oourse of circulation in tho western district asking the member for Wallaoe to oppose Mr Seddou's Gold Duty Abolition Bill, that duty being one of the main souroes of revenue iv the mining distriot of the electorate.
