SHOULD A LICENSE BE GRANTED.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— l believe that at the next meeting of the Waitotara Licensing Committee tomorrow application will be made for a renewal of the license of the Aramoho Hotel, a new license for a house (not yet built) near the Aramoho Railway junction. I have not heard, sir, any good reasons adduced for the erection of an hotel at this spot, while I think several weighty arguments may be used against such a course. In the first place it cannot be said that the travelling public requiro it, as the trains make no stoppages there, passengers coming right on to Wanganui if they have occasion to wait for tho next train, and if train passengers do not require it who on earth is there travelling that will ? The main objection I have to it, however, is that it will be located in the centre of what may be called a working man's settlement. There are no doubt, many who reside in that part of tho town and at Eastowu, who, by reason of tho distance they are situated from a publichouse are compelled- to remain at home when they might, with the temptation close at hand, put in their evenings in a far lees profitable manner. It strikes me that a house there would degenerate into a drinking Bhop, and become a curse to the neighborhood, and I believe it is the duty of the Lioensing Committee to carefully weigh these facts before granting a license to anyone.— Yours &c,
At Wellington 100 persons have signified their intention of proceeding to Kimberley, 26 old diggers have already left Greymouth, and the Waihora has taken a number from Auckland, for the same destination.
