THE PREMIER ON THE NEW HEBRIDES AND THE PRESBYTERIAN MISSIONS.

Cairns, of Sydenham, in reply to one enclosing resolutions passed by the Presbyteries of Auckland and Cari&tcnurch, on the subject of the proposed annexation of the New Hebrides by Francet Mr Stout states that the Government have continually opposed the acquisition by foreign powers of any of the Pacific Islauds, ancj; that they recognise the. great efforts made by the Pres? byteriah Church in the New Hebrides group. The Premier, in very decided language, expresses himself on the continued deportation of criminals by France to the South Seas, and he goes on to say that it should be clearly understood that the proposals aro not only that convicts shall not be deported to the Now Hebrides, but (a) That convicts shall not for all future timo be sent to Now Caledonia nor to any of the French possessions in tho South Pacific, and that this arrangement shall bo ratified by treaty . (b) That tho trade rights and commercial privileges granted to Frenchmen shall be also open to British subjects residing in or resorting to tho Now Hebrides group. This has been arranged regarding Raiatea, and a similar arrangement would bo made regarding the Now Hebrides, (c) Adequate safeguards are to be provided that religious freedom will be maintained throughout the group, and that the present missions Bhall be protected in thoir property, their rights, and their privilegcß. (d) That France shall code to England tho island of Opara or Ripa, and also shall not stand in the way of Raratonga or rather tho Cook or Harvoy group going to England if the natives aro willing. The Premier concludes by asking the Presbyterians to give tho matter their careful consideration, and ho hopeß they may bo able to give him an early expression of the determination at which their church arrives,
