MELBOURNE BETTING. Melboujrnf, October 16.— Tom Brown
has been backed for the Caulfield Cup at 13 to 1, and Yellow Hammer at 20 to 1. No other alteration to report in the betting. VICTOKIA AND HEX, W7OOLW 7 00 L EXPORT. A meeting of merchants and others, interested in the export of wool, was held here to-day, and was largely attended. Resolutions were passed affirming the desirability of taking immediate action with the view of providing new markets for wool.
NEWS FROM NEW GUINEA,
Sydney, October 14.— 8y latest advices to hand from Mew Guinea it appears that the High Commissioner, Sir Peter Scratchley, and members of his party were all in good health when the steamer left. Mr H. O. Forbes, the well known explorer, has just proceeded into theinterior of the island, and proposes to undertake the ascent of Mounts Owen and Stanley: SHIPPINGArrived yesterday, Rotomahana from New Zealand.
