Melbourne, Deo 16.— The Melbourne manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) reports of the local markets as follows : — Wheat is in fair demand at 3s 7d to 3s 8d ; malting barley ia steady. New Zealand oats — There is a speculative demand for feeding sorts ; a moderate inquiry for milling qualities. New Zealand oats, under bond, are quoted at 2s 8d to 2a lid. The market is dull. The market for kauri timber is quiet. CONFESSION OF A MURDER. Dec 17.— B»rnes, a notorious criminal prisoner, has confessed that he murdered Mr Stack, the well-known litigant, who died on 11th September, and who was beHeved to have committed suicide. SHIPPING. Sydney, Dec 17. —Arrived, on Monday, Ringarooma, from Auckland. SMALL-POX IN SYDNEY. Two fresh cases of small-pox have occurred in to is city. DR DONOVAN FINED £150. Dr Donovan has been fined £150 for neglecting to notify to the authorities smallpox cases which were under his treatment.
