CHRISTCHURCH.

May 7. Edmund Amyes, a member of the Spreydon Road Board, was fined £5 to-day for sitting on the Board in a matter in which he was interested.

Sir George Grey addressed fully 2500 people in the Tuam Street Hall this evening, under the auspices of the Working Men's Political Association. He dwelt on the evils which had arisen from land having been cut up into large estates, to the exclusion of poor men, and advocated the taxing of the unearned increment of land. The following motion was carried :— That -this meeting having heard Sir George Grey's opinions on the present political crisis, heartily approve of them, and believe that the future welfare of the colony depends on the carrying out of the principles therein expressed, and recognise in Sir George Grey the moat fitting leader for the purpose of doing so.
