Mr FITZGERALD BEFORE HIS CONSTITUENTS.

(PEB UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

Hokitika, March 17.

Mr FitzGerald, M.H.R., both at Ross and here, spoke strongly against Land Nationalisation, and said freehold was best tenure for prosperity of country, and was what attracted men to the colony. He argued that Legislature should either limit the area, which any one man could hold, or should impose progressive tax on holdings above a certain area. He preferred the former plan, but had no objection to the limited area of agricultural land being leased by the Crown, but was sure that the system would break down if an attempt was made to push it too far.
