THE MAKARA-GOLD REEFS

(pee united press association). Wellington, November 3. The following letter from the legal man* * ager of the Queen of Beauty "" mine, was received to-day by .Mr Henry Blundell, ,-to whom, in conjunction with Mr J. C. Harris/, the dispute regarding the claim' was re* , [ ferred :— " Dear Sir, — With reference to the/ wager made between Messrs Isen and ' Walker re the Queen of Beauty Goldmining , Company's mine, I am instructed by my '_ directors to inform you that they, decline ; tO' " allow the proposed test of the quartz to take, place, on the ground that the mere test of a few dishes of stuff would not prove the value of the mine, but that the company ■ will be quite prepared to allow two tons to be put through at any efficient battery that, may be agreed upon. — I am, &c, W. B.> S. . Hickson, legal manager." The following, reply was published in the Post : — Sir, — In reply to the above letter, we beg to state , that in consequence of the plan of testing operations as first proposed having been altered, we decline to act in the matter. We think the proposition to crush two tons an excellent one, provided it is carried out ■ under such surveillance as will be above suspicion. We trust the directors will give effect to the proposition to crush two tons, but for ourselves we must object to incurring the responsibility of such a delicate and onerous undertaking. We are, &c., Henry Blundell, J. Chantrey Harris."
