MR FREEMAN R. JACKSON'S FORTNIGHTLY STOCK REPORT.
Wednesday, October 31. In addition to my usual stock sales I have held two special ones during the fortnight. One on account of H. Morecroft, Esq., and a large sale of cattle on account of John Hair, Esq. Mr Morecrof t's sale drew a large attendance, and being favored with a beautiful day, it went off well. The best sheep did not quite realise tbe vendor's expectations. This was in a great measure occasioned by the low price of wool, but for those of a medium class capital prices were obtained. The wet day materially affected the attendance at Mr Hair's sale, though actual buyers were numerous. The cattle were greatly admired, being considered on all handa as the best lob of bullocks ever yarded on the Coast. They were in splendid condition, and showed that great care and attention had been bestowed upon them by the breeder. They elicited spirited bidding throughout the sale, and the prices obtained must be considered satisfactory to the vendor. At the yards to-day a small number of cattle and sheep made up he sale, the bulk being sold at quotatic. below. The bull sale on Saturday was poorly attended, and little business was done. I -have to report a better demand for all descriptions of stock. The scarcity of beef, and consequently an increasing inquiry for stores, must create an upward tendancy in values. Cattle.— At Hawera 300 head were yarded : Bullocks, £4 12s 6d to £5 3s 6d ; cows, £1 19s ; yearlings, 275 ; heifers, 37s 6d. At St Hill Street 103 head were offered : Fat light cows, £4 to £4 17s 9d ; store heifers, £2 ss. Sheep. — Mr Morecroft penned 1850 head. Best ewes and lambs, 16s 6d ; medium ewes and lambs, 14s and 14s 9d ; inferior, 8a Id ; hoggets, 7s 9d to 10s lOd, according to quality ; rams, 10s to L 7 23 6d.
