WANGAEHU HIGHWAY BOARD.
. TO THB EDITOB. Sib,— Would you kindly allow me spice for the following : — Now that the elections are' over, and plenty of fresh blood infused into the new Board, it might not be out of place for a ratepayer to offer one or two suggestions with regard, to the funds of th« \ above body. It is admitted by all that _tbe progress of the district is much retarded, «od settlers put to great inconvenience, for want of roads. If application is made for a small expenditure, the reply has generally been "no funds." I know the revenue of this Board is small compared with the expenditure required, but the general opinion is that this small amount has not been made the best of. The late Board made a very poor attempt at retrenchment when they reduced the wages of road men, aud raised the salary of the Secretary. I fear they had not the courage of their opinions on that occasion. Now, sir, without the slightest illfeeling towards the officials— for T believe them to be thoroughly competent ; but, in all candour, I must say they are taking too great a proportion of out small income, and would therefore suggest that the Secretaryship be competed for at the outset, and have every reason to believe the results would be very satisfactory. I think if the Warden* gave an eye to the repairs required, and, by giving, say Is $er day, extra to a prachoal road man, the services of the Foreman of Works could be dispensed with altogether Of course, work where extra skill it required, could be done by special arrangement. This, I believe, would also consider* ably augment the funds, and give greater satisfaction to the electors. , Trusting the new Board will give this matter their timely consideration,— l am, &0., Ratkpatbßi June 36th.
