Wanganui Herald. (PUBLISHED DAILY.) SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 1883.

Mr Stout appears to have turned the evidence of the prisoners inside out, and quite broken down the charges madeagainst thelate Governor of the Dunedin Gaol, Mr Caldwell. It would appear that the Inspector of Prisons Captain Hume, invited the inquiry. The Resident Magistrates represent the Government, who are probably anxious to damage Mr Caldwell, though we have no doubt the Commissioners will try to be impartial. It is advisable, therefore, to discouut or hold in abeyance the first injurious statements made by prisoners. One piece of evidence will show the necessity of this. A prisoner Btated that men and women were forced into the same bath room. Upon cross-examina-tion, the witness denied that he meant the bath room was used at the same time by both sexes. Other evidence of a damaging character has been equally demolished. The Evening Post and other journals would appear to have received retainers to ruin Mr Caldwell. From the turn affairs have taken it would be well that judgment were suspended until the enquiry is finished. There would be all the stronger reason for this if the political influences and personal antagonisms at work were fully understood.
