THE TARANAKI RACECOURSE DIFFICULTY.

(per united press association.)

New Plymouth, Jan 5.

The question of the Government attempting to make over a reserve within the limits of the Borough, about fifty acres in extent, to the Taranaki Jockey Club, against the wishes of the Borough Council, is again agitating the public. A meeting was held by the Club on Wednesday, when a resolution was passed by the Club agreeing to accept a lease of 42 years at a rental of £75 per annum, free of rates. The Borough Council met last evening, when the matter was again discussed, and the following resolution passed:— "That the Council use every legitimate means in its power to prevent the diversion of the reserve now used as a racecouase from the uses for which it was originally granted to the Superintendent of the Province, viz., the improvement of the streets and town of New Plymouth. And that the Government be furnished with a copy of this resolution, with a request thatthe terms of the new grant be in keeping with the original grant. '
