THE GOVERNMENT AND THE KING COUNTRY.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. )

Auckland, Nov 20.

The Herald— Mr Bryco's mouthpieco while in Auckland — thia morning says, in regard to Native affairs, that only tho one course is now open to tho Government. After a, narrative of past events, the Herald continues :—": — " Wo must at once take another step, and what that step is to ho is also pretty clear. Tlie Natives should bo iufurmed that the Government can no longer recognise their right to hold a largo district of country through which no European is allowed to j'ass. They should be told that if tho public interest requires it, the Government has a right to nuke a railway over any land, compensating tho owners. Tho question arises, Will there be any danger of disturbances ? We do not thiuk, with careful ami cautious administration, there is any risk." Matters having come to this pass, I may add that au order some ten days since had been given for an expeditionary turvey party to Btart, but the orders were suddenly countermanded. It is too early as yet to say what the general northern feeling is, but some northern members look at the proposals askance. The oppcrtuue re-arrangement of volunteer is considered by them as significant, and whatever the result may be Wahanui disclaims tho responsibility Mr Bryce thrusts on hint, aud the Herald says Government has now only to deal with the land owners, Kingism being dead — hinting certainly, though darkly, at further confiscation.

The Government are wanting the press to express au opinion as to the expediency of abolishing return tickets on railways.

The Eangitikei, Manawatu, and Wanganui Couuty Councils will held their annual meetings for the election of Chairman at noon to-morrow.
