EVOLUTION HYPOTHESIS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Siß,— The letter signed P.L.C., which appeared in yesterday's Herald, exhibits considerable research, and teeming as it does with quotations from such eminent men as Darwin, Huxley, Tindall, Haekel, Sir William Thomson, and others, in support of the writer's views, merits further consideration. P.L.C. points out that Darwin's postulates are set forth as axioms, a distinction which few but a mathematiciau would detect. But what both surprises and perplexes me.isthat the very authorities quoted by P.L.C., in refutation, are the self-same as those from whom the lecturer, to which the paragraph in question refers, is so largely indebted for his arguments, as well as the very views with which the lectures were illustrated. Is there no one in the district who both can and will expose the fallacies, if such they are, that are so surely undermining the religion of our fathers ? Is it not surprising that one, who is neither an orator, nor an actor, should, by the mere force of words, for eleven consecutive nights, without even the aid of music, be able to fill to overflowing the building in which Denton delivered his lectures, and that too notwithstanding the compulsory fees for admission; while there is room enough and to spare in our churches, where the Gospel is preached to all who choose to be present, without let or hindrance? — I am, &c, X.
