' " "Our "Patea correspondent "writes : — The schooner Jane Anderson is still lying at the Patea Heads. She would have got off yesterday had she been lightened, but the captain decided not to take any of the timber "*" out until instructions were received from insurance agents and owners of the vessel. The Balmain Regatta was celebrated in Sydney harbor on the 10th. The yacht Waitangi, built by Messrs Nicol and Son of Auckland won the first prize in the race • or handicapped yachts exceeding eight tons. The following account of the race is from the Sydney Herald : — "The handicap was—Waitangi and Oithona, scratch j Guinevere and Harpy, 10 minutes ; Pleiades, 11 minutea ; Meteor, 12 minutes. The whole of the ■ yachts came to the start, and carried a heavy

press of canvas, and while manceuvering for

the flying start, which is a novelty in regattas, a lai'ge amount of interest was centred in them. The start was fairly good, and Oithona and Waitangi reached down towards the flagship at close quarters, the latter being on the weather side. As they neared the ship, Oithona luffed as if intending to comedown on the weather side, Waitangi at the same time kept away as if intending to pass on the lee side of the ship ; the Oithona being blanketed, and her rival laying over at a great angle, their spars came violently in contact with a great crash. It appeared as if the Waitangi's gaff end fouled the Oithona's topmast stays. They were in contact nearly a minute, and the Oithona's topmast being broken off, some- time was lost in clearing away the wreck. Both crafts,' however, went on with protests in their rigging. When they returned from Manly the Waitangi was leading, and the timing- at the flagship was as follows :—: — Waitangi, 2 hours 49 minutes 45 seconds ; Harpy,. 2 hours 54 minutes 20 seconds; Oithona, 2 houra 58 minutes 10 seconds ; . Meteor, 3 hours 2 minutes ;■ Guinevere, 3 houra 8 minutes. The weather was ex-

tremely severe while the race vras being . sailed, but no casualties happened beyond what is stated above. Waitangi came in the winning yacht at 4 hours 1 minute 25secs ; Harpy, winner of the second price, at 4 hours 16 minutes 10 seconds.
