THE POLICE.
The re-arrangement of the Police districts has been decided upon, and in future the officers will be distributed as under :—Superintendent Shearman, Wellington District ; Superintendent Weldon, Dunedin ; Superintendent Broham, Christchurch ; Superintendent Atchison, Nelson, including Marlborough; Superintendent James, Taranaki, including Wanganui ; Superintendent Thomson, Auckland, including Thames and Tauranga; Inspector Scully, Hawke's Bay, including Poverty Bay} Inspector Emerson, Westland; Inspector Hickson, Lake; Inspector Moore, Timaru ; Inspector Thompson, Invercargill. Wanganui has now been tacked on to Taranaki, and Mr James, the Superintendent in charge, will, it is presumed, make New Plymouth his head-quar-ters. If that should be the decision arrived at, we think we are fairly entitled to ask that Sub-Inspector Goodall should remain in charge of the Wanganui district. As the title of Sub -Inspector seems to be abolished, Mr Goodall will have to be content with the rank of Sergeant. The reduction in pay and rank is a sufficient contribution by one man to the demand for retrenchment without insisting upon removal also.
