MONDAY EVENING.
The House resumed at 7.30. After some discussion without any result over the Hansard vote, the remaining items of the Legislative Department passed with substantial alterations. — The Treasury, Froperty Tax, Miscellaneous, Customs, Stamps and Harbor Departments passed with only reductions proposed by the Government, amongst them being the omission of the vote, Auditor of County and . Road Board Accounts, £2700, and - Weather Reporting, £104. — On the Education vote a long debate took place. — Hon Mr Rolleston moved a reduction by £32,000, which he proposed to, save by enforcing greater economy on the part of Education Boards without crippling School Committees, and omission of the vo;te for libraries. He defended the Education system, — Mr McCaughan protested against such a large expenditure on Education in the present financial state of the Colony, and moved that the vote be reduced to £50,000. — Mr Pyke strongly condemned the present system of free education, and said the people were anxious to pay fees. — Messrs Bowen, Montgomery, launders, and others defended the present system. " At 1 o'clock progress was reported, and the House adjourned. '
