MAXWELL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The usual monthly meeting of the Committee was held in the school room, Maxwell, on Saturday January 4th, Mr W. Darbyshire in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

■ Correspondence was read from the [ Education Board re Library Fund and schoolmaster's salary, also from the same re maps for the school referred to. Mr Scott's and iVJr Cha'mers' account were ordered to be sent to the Board for payment, as they had made use of the plans in question in calling for tenders for additions to the school room. " A report from Messrs Handiey, Burdon, and Scott, the sub-committee appointed for forming a school library was read, stating that the subscriptions up to the 31st December amounted to £31 4s 6d, and recommending the immediate application to the Education Board for a Subsidy which will raisa the amount to over £60.

The distribution of prizes and examination were held on December 20th, and passed off most successfully. Rules for the maintenance and control of the library have been drawn up, which it is proposed to forward to the Board for revision. We have also received a letter from Mr Hislop, of the Education Department, Wellington, giving advice as to the general scope of the rules, and proffering his assistance in the selection of suitable books.

The subcommittee' recommended that Mr Scott reply to the letter, thanking Mr Hislop for Ms valuable advice and assist' anoe. ' We also recommend that an account be opened with the Bank of New Zealand to bo called the "Maxwell Library Fund " in the joint names of the Chairman and schoolmaster.

Further collections both of books and money will be made during the month of January."

Resolved, on the motion of Mr Burdon, seconded by Mr Morrison— That the report be adopted, and the Secretary entrusted to apply at once to the Board for the subsidy. . Mr Scott was authorised to alter the internal 'arrangements' of the school by pulling down the old fixures and placing the' new- desks. ' > - 7! A long discussion then took place as to the state of- the school master's residence, for which money was voted for five or six months, ago by the Boartf.. , The last coininunieafion from the Board stated that the subject had been referred by the Building- Committee back to the Board, and that it would be finally settled at the December meeting. The Building Committee'advised the "erection. of a new house, but nothing appeared to have been done in the matter, and the schoolmaster is still without a residence. It was nowresolved that the Secretary again call the attention of the Education Board to the disgraceful condition of the school house, which should be pulled down, as it is the resort of bad characters, who get in through the broken windows. A vote of thanks was passed to the Rev J. Allsworth, Messrs Lowes and Dempster, 'who acted as examiners at the public examination in the Town Hall.
