A heavy storm of thunder, lightning and rain visited Napier yesterday afternoon. AUDKftAJTD, Jan §. The criminal sessions were opened today by Justice Gillies. Robert William BeJlars, for false pretences, pleaded guilty, sentence deferred ; Wm, Brack o pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, and was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. Theodore Alexander Cox pleaded guilty to larceny as a bailee, and was sentenced <o 9 months. ' - •

January 7. The death of J. X Crombie at Melbourne, en route for Auckland, ia announced. He commenced business as a photographer in Nelson in 1854, afterwards came to Auckland, and realised a fortune in Caledonian gold mine shares. Dunedin, Jan 6. Judge Williams, of Invercargill, presided at the Supreme Court sessions this morning. James Miller, charged with fraudulent bankruptcy, was acquitted by the direction of His Honor, The accused carried on business as a grocer, and on the day before filing his declaration of insolvency he ordered six bags of sugar. It appeared, however, that the sugar waß not delivered till after the declaration was filed, and consequently tho case broke down.

James Morgan pleaded guilty to forging and uttering a cheque for £3, and was remanded for sentence.

About a dozen women of bad repute were sent to gaol this morning for terms extending from one to three months, for vagrancy.

On Saturday, a man named Frank South was found by the police in an altuost nude state. He was charged with lunacy, but, on medical examination, was found to be suffering from drink.? 1 On being brought before the Bench to-day, he declared that he was subject to attacks of insanity, and that the authorities in Australia had paid his passage to get rid o£ him . He was sent to gaol for 14 dnys. A casual lodger in an hotel found £165 in the bed shown him to sleep" in. The owner returned shortly afterwards, claimed and received the money, and generously rewarded the -finder with ten shillings.

At the Supreme Court criminal sessions, true bills wore found against Kate Davies for attempted suicide, and Murphy for indecent assault. In the latter case the grand jury said the evidence disclosed a graver offence, and the Chief Justice ordered another indictment. Snrah Hannah Jacobs pleaded guilty to attempted suicide and was released on .her husband's recognizance to come lip - f for judgment when called upon. William Watson, alias Sutton, pleaded guilty to larceny from a dwelling, and was remanded for sentence.
