The raciug seoson of of 1878-79 may now be said to have fairly commenced, and from the large number of programmes issued by the different Jocke.Y Clubs throughout New Zealand there should bo sport for the million. Last week the Geraldine meeting was held, and this week the Duntroon and Cromwell, Otago, meetings will be receiving attention, and should throw some light on the big Spring meeting at Christchurch, at all events give a key to the probable result of the C.J.C. Handicap, as there are several performers at these small meets, whioh are to sport colors on the 6th, 6th, and 7th of November, on the Cbriatchurch racecourse,

Sparrowtail 1 and Eclipse took it together, and raced along side by side for sonio distance, Sparrowtail refused the second hurdle, and gave Eclipse the lead, but old Ivanhoe soon took.it from him. Opposite the stand the stand the positions were — Ivanhoe, Ist ; Eclipse, 2nd. ; Te Whetu. 3rd j and Pakeha, 4th ; and no change took place till pausing it again. Then Te Whetu shot to the front, Ivanhoe falling second, and Eclipse third. Pakeha shortly afterwards secured third place, but was unable to collar Ivanhoe, who raced Te Whetu right into the post. To Whetu,. however, had the game in his own hands, and won in a, ridiculously »low canter, Pakeha being a good third, and Eclipse fourth. Time— 6tnin. 40secs.
