Alexandra, May 20.

Rewi and other Ngatimaniaopoto chiefs have issued an order that in future no Natives are to be imprisoned for robbery in Alexandria. In case of Natives committing .any crimes, their punishment is to be arranged between ths chiefs and the Government.

Tauranga, May 20.

The Bay of Plenty Times' Opotiki correspondent telegraphs the following : — An unprovoked outrage and attempt to burn down the whare of Mr Reay, Government surveyor, over his head, was committed on Friday night at Ohiwa pa, by Te Wharu and his brother-in-law. The matter has been reported to Captain Preece, R.M. If immediate action be not taken, Reay will be compelled to cease work.

Gisborne, May 20.

The sale of Putatahi lands is to take place to morrow. It has created a great deal of interest, and intending buyers from all parts of the country are represented hero ; the hotels are crowded.

Mr JRees was unable to leave here on Saturday. It seems that a thorough ripping up of a" number of land titles in this district will be necessary before matters can rest on a sound basis. Relative to Messrs Baker's and McDonald's run these gentlemen have been interviewed with the hope of having tho title adjusted. A meeting between the Natives and Europeans is fixed for Wednesday, when efforts will be made to settle the difficulties without appealing to the Supreme Court.

Reefton, May 20.

Reeves addressed a crowded meeting of tho Reefton electors. His speech was an elaboration of of his printed address. At tho conclusion he received an unanimous vote, " That ho was a fit and proper person to represent the constituency in Parliament." Mr Barrowman followed, but was not sufficiently clear on the education question, and an amendment , " That he was not a fit and proper person to represent tho constituency," declared earned. May 21. Newton has announced that having been nominated for Grey Valley during his absence, and without his consent, and there not being time to canvass the district, he does not intend to contest the election.

Wellington, May 20. The Government have notified by circulars to all tenderers for public works that, in consequence of the threatening attitude of European affairs, they are not prepared to assume larger liabilities than are absolutely necessary, and therefore postpone accepting any more tenders for public works until more satisfactory intelligence is received from London relative to financial matters, and the possibility of floating a new loan. It is stated that £150,000 worth of work is thus stopped. 11l consequence of a difficulty in getting the plant on the road the daily mail service between Wellington and Wanganui will not begin before Thursday morning.

The walking match, Bowley v. Pentecost, for £50 a side, came off to-day. Pentecost received a start of half an hour, in which he covered nearly three miles. Bowley, walking splendidly, caught Pentecost just beforo finishing 38 miles, Bowley covered 40 miles in 7 hours 55 minutes.
