THE CABLE CONFERENCE.
Melbourne, May 18.
The Cable Conference has concluded. The result includes Glover's proposal for a duplication between Singapore and Port Darwin ; also a second cable between Penang and Singapore, with a subsidy of £32,000 annually, to be paid rateably by the different colonies, according to population. The press rate is reduced one-fourth, and Government messages one-half. New Zealand and Tasmania get no advantage by the reduced cable rates. Nothing was done re the duplicate land line to Port Darwin. Tasmania and Queensland are dissatisfied with the arrangement. May 20.
The Cable Conference decided to adopt Glover's recommendation. The second cable between Singapore and Port Darwin should avoid the Java land line. The subsidy to the Cable Company is not to exceed 45,400 for not more than 20 years. The reduction on the present rates is to one-fourth, or 75 per cent. Wilson, the Tasmanian representative, attaches to his signature a memo, regretting that the Conference declined to entertain the suggestion that the cable connecting Tasmania and New Zealand be treated as part of tho general scheme of telegraphic communication with Europe.
