The p s Manawatu, Captain Harvey left Wellington on Monday at G p.m.' passing out of the Heads against a strong Boutheily gale. Went as far as Sinclair Head, when the gale increased with a tremendous sea ; was obliged to run fer shelter, anchoring in Worser's Bay at 11 p.m. Steamed back to the wharf at noon next day, and made a fresh start on Wednesday at 7.40 am., arrivg off the bar at 10 p.m. Crossed at 10.30, arriving alongside the Corporation wharf at 11 30. Experienced fresh southerly breeze throughout the passage. Captain Harvey informs us that it is the worst weather the Manawatu has ever experienced, fears being entertained on one occasion during the trip for her safety. The sea was rushing over her deck for and aft.
The ss Stormbird, Captain Doile, left Wellington at 7.15 p.m. yesterday. Experienced fine weather throughout the passage. Arrived oil" the bar at 9 a.m., and crossed at 11. Made fast to the brigantine Entei prise, and towed her up as far as the Bluff where she grounded and the ton rope broke. The Enterprise is likely to remain a fixture for some time being very deep with railway iron. Stormbird arrived at the whaif at mid-day, and brings a large general cargo, and full list of passengers. The Stormbird sails for for Wellington again at midnight.
