Meeting of Shareholders.

A. meeting of the above Company _ took place in the School-room on the 9th inst., Mr Charles Pownall, in the Chair. . The Chairman, having r#ad, the advertisement in the Manawatu Times convening the meeting, then stated that 1 the shareholders had been ca'llftd together for the purpose of 'deciding- upon a site for the proposed building, and to inspect the plans before advertising for tenders. Before entering into the immediate business, the Chairman said he- .would draw the attention of the meeting ' to ' the '.present condition of the Company. ' It appeared that the deposit of 5s had been I 'paid on 466 shares ; 220 more shares had been acknowledged to by the parties! against whose names they were placed, ■ but the deposit had still to be paid, while eightynine shares, as per the original list, were unacknowledged. The meeting then took into consideration,^? site, yFive 'different allotments were offered, out 1 of ' which the choice fell upon one, the Square in a quarter acre near the Post Office. A plan for the building, prepared by Mr Hughes, was the next matter before the i meeting,' and it was resolved that Messrs Mitclfell, Hughes, .Ritchie, Auste i n i -and r Baiibury, he appointed a Committee to 'consider the plans and bring them' 1 up in ; a 'complete form as soon as possible. • A vote of thanks to ■ the i Chairman brought the meeting, to 'a close. // The John Pascal, a u'e\v ship of 1470 tons, while on her voyage' from Calcutta to New York, has been' burnet^ at sea. Wight of the crew have' been examined Ijy the authorities at. Madeira as-' ,to the circumstances connected with the loss of the vesssel,' but 'their!' account was not considered satisfactory. '; hey have been meanwhile shipped to Southampton, and a further examination is expected to take place. The value of the vessel was about' £2o,ooo ; that of the cargo is not yet ascertained.
