Wellington^ Feb. 9. Tt is learned by the Arawata that Sir Julius Vogcl had a long conference by telegraph with the Premier and Post-master-General of New South Wales. Instead of altering nature of mail service it was agreed to require from New Caledonia and Fiji £5,000 each for carriage of mails. This will reduce the I subsidy of the amount specified by resolution of Assembly, leaving' through
boats and coastal service as by contract.
The cable by the Hibernia, as well as by the Edinburgh, has arrived m perfect order. Both steamers were to start on Saturday last, the 4th, and expect to roach New Zealand about the iSth. The Hibeniialays the deep water cable west from Sydne}', and splices to Edinburgh at sea. The latter lays the heavier cable towards Cape Farewell, buoys olf point, and laya from the Tns man Island shore cud and hi termed i;if,o oable to her buoy. Vogcl had arranged with the officer in charge of cable that if the Cook Strait cable was not repaired on arrival of steamers, they would repair it, and if necessary supply temporary cable from surplus cable.. Lytteltoh, Fob, 8. Arrived — Otaki, ship, from London, 98 clays out ; immigrants all well. Also, Crusade)', ship, from London, US days out. Passengers all well. The Jessie Osborne's immigrants landed from quarantine to-day.
