WAIROA.

» ~- (From our own correspondent.) Feb. sth. A meeting has been held amongst the settlers residing on the inland side of the Kohi Gorge with the object of securing a school there, it being too far from Wairoa for children to travel every day to attend our school. The General Government have set aside 100 acres in that direction as a reserve for educational purposes, and there is no doubt the Education Board could secure it and let it ; of course, first providing a suitable site for the proposed school. A memorial has been sent to the Board requesting them to act as above, and to erect a school and provide a master. There are twenty-five children of the age for attending school, and plenty more just below the age, so, although perhaps the present number of probable scholars would hardly warrant the establishment of a school, it is to be hoped the Board will consider the 100 acres as an additional reason for making this case an exception, or the rising generation over the Kohi may grow up dangerously ignorant. Let the Board find the school and master, and I will back the settlers to find the children. Only the other day Wairoa had a dozen school-children ; to-day, it has a larger school than Carlyle, and a master aud mistress fully employed. I believe ovei seventy are now on the boolcs, and I fully expect it will increase to over 100 within this year. A Government Survey party has just, started on a block inland of the last sold here, but as no attempt has been made to cut even a bridle track in that direction, the new block is not likely to sell at any price.
