Wellington, Feb. 4. The General Assembly Library Committee decided to-day to call for tenders for the erection of a fire proof building at the rear of the Legislative Council Chamber for a library. Feb. 5. O'Shea reports flour £11 to £12 j wheat, 3s ; oats, 2s 9d to 3s ; maize, o? 9d to 4s 6d ; bran, Is ; potatoes, £8 ; cheese, lOd ; butter, 9d ; hams, Is 2d ; bacon, Is. Arrived — Ship Commonwealth, from London, 97 days out. She brings 40 passengers, all well. An attempt ia being made to form a Theatre Company, and to erect a new. one at the Te Aro end of the town. A large amount is already subscribed. Timaetj, Feb. 5. Railway demonstration yesterday /vas very successful ; a train containing nearly 300 people came from Christchurch, doing the hundred miles in about seven hours.. Banquet was given at the Odd Fel' low's Hall in the afternoon, 720 sitting down ; the speeches took a strong political turn, and a great deal of confusion and dissatisfaction ensued. GnAHAsrsTOWN, Feb. 5. James Norton, formerly in the Customs at Auckland and the Thames, walked off Grnhamstown wharf at one o'clock this morning, and was drowned. He had just landed from the steamer. The night "was dark. He gave no cry, and could not be seen. Christchurch, Feb. 4. Export prices f.o.b. at Lyttelton— All old wheat, 4s to 4s 3d ; old oats, 2s ; barley, 3s 9d to 4s ; butter, 9d to I Is 2d ; cheese, 9d ; grass, 5s to 5s 6d. The, weather is splendid for harvest operations. Auckland, Feb. 4. A German named Buschett, employed rafting logs, slipped, fell underneath the floating, timber and was drowned. Buckland reports — Fat cattle, 26s to 32s Gd per lOOlbs ; inferior were 2s 6d lower than last week ; sheep unusually plentiful, ewes, 2s 5d each lower ; wethers, at previous values ; broadstuffs and produce market dull and unchanged.
