PURUKUTU'S THREAT.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING HERALD.

Wanganui,September IS, 1873.

Sir, —The late telegrams from Cambridge say that Purukutii is tired of inactivity, and threatens to kill another European. Truly it is also stated that the King has ordered him to remain quiet. But what do these statements mean ? Why, in ihe first place, that the Government by their tardy, lukewarm, and almost indifferent action in the matter of the murder of Sullivan, Tod, and Whitely, have tolerated Purukutii and other murderers and rebels to such au extent that they now look upon them as beiuj; either incompetent or afraid to punish, and therefore treat with scorn and contempt any order or command emanating from them. While, on the other hand, the King of Maoridom probably asks Purukntu to re" main quiet ; yet, biilrind the scenes he is perhans aiding and abetting him to resist the authority of the Government. Should such be Mr Purukutu's determination, it is to be hoped that he will find a fitting subject to gratify his murderous desire and satisfy his cannibal propensities by sacrificing some one in high authority— say perhaps a Minister of tiie Crown. If lie can succed in accomplishing- this share, no doubt the inactivity he now complain of will he altered to his satisfaction. But until he does something akin to this he may rest assured that the Government will allow him to rest in inglorious inactivity, and murder the hard working pakeha without deigning to interfere with him. Yours, &c, Pakeha.
