tx , Jul7 16. Halcione will be leleasecl from quarantine to-day.
Proposed alteration of the constitution of the Uppe.i House referred to in the Governor's speech, will probably bo to make it elective, on a modification of the Australian plans. Each member of the Council to represent a district made up by a group of districts returning members to the General Assembly. No special qualifications beyond those required by members of the Lower House. Term of election to be seven years instead of five. Adoption of system to date from next dissolution.
DUNEDIN.
July 16th. R. G. Stratton, Architect, died suddenly from heart disease.
The Provincial Treasurer made financial statement ; estimated revenue, £502,743 ; estimated expenditure, £518,688.
Jockey Club propose that the next Dunedm Cup should be 300 sovereigns.
CHRTSTCHURCH.
•July 16th. New Eill drafted to be introduced to the Assembly granting enlarged powers to the Corporation.
Orange dinner last night ; 250 persons attended. The Rev. J. Buller responding to one toast said the battle"of freedom of religious liberty would have one day to be fought in I\ rew Zealand, as the Roman Oatlielics were endeavouring by all means in their power to obtain increased influence in the Colony.
AUCKLAND
July 16th. THE SUPERINTENDENCE
Lusk's meeting last night. Hour elapsed before the candidate could be heard. At conclusion of the speech, a motion was made that Lusk having introduced the Education tax he was°not lit to be Superintendent. Amendment moved in favor of Lusk. Lights were extinguished, and the Chairman and others ou the platform hustled and bonneted. Gas was relighted and the motion against Lusk put and declared carried. Rowdiest meeting ever, held in Auckland.
