ORIGINAL POETRY
LITTLE TOM TIT. (written for music). The little Tan. Tit went fluttering around, Till a " Watt " and a "press " in its need were found ; Then it settled a story above the ground Tit, tit, tit. It changed its note to a " we, we, we," And part of the fourth estate would be And swelled its voice to the last degreeTit, tit, tit. It attempted the lordly eagle's shriek • Succeeded a little with the peacock's squeak ; It tried to peck with its little beakTit, tit, tit. It tried to look wise like a very owl ; It tried to crow like a barn door fowl ; Did very well with the jackall's howlTit, tit, tit. Tit, tit, tit is such a very nice tune, But one tires of the note uncommonly soon, And now we hear it, night, morning, and noon— Tit, tit, tit. If Little Tom Tit had a little more brain • If little Tom Tit were a little less vain ' To listen might then give a little less pain— Tit, tit, tit. Go back, Tommy Tit, to your nest on the : wire ' Your wings were not made for soaring much higher ; Your chirping will ne'er set the ocean on fire— Tit, tit, tit. P. Q.
