TARANAKI STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY.
At the third half-yearly meeting of the above company held at New Plymouth dj^ the 27th ult., the following report was 7 read : — a " The Directors, in presenting the half-J^T yearly balance sheet, have again to reporil a loss of £265 7s>3d. This sum, however, iucluciesan amount'of £133 8s 2d for insurance, the greater portion of which is extended" to August, 1873. ' : The steamer is now daily expected from Sydney, having been away about three months getting new engines* and extensive repairs effected, andj on hei return, it is to. be hoped her trips will be more regularly performed, and get a fair-share of passengertraffic. '. -~.-; The Directors are unable to lay before shareholders the cost of repairs until .the steamer returns, when it is contemplated to call another meeting, and submit the report of the engineer and master to the' shareholders, together with a financial statement. ... . .;:
It is stated that 160,000 sheep, and 7,000 ■ cattle have been preserved at the New Zealand Meat Preserving Company's several establishments during the past year; 19,722 sheep, and 324 cattle were for the'same period, preserved at the Otago Meat Preserving Company's Works at Green Island, and estimating the Southland Company's Works at Winton, at 12,000 sheep gives" a total of 191,722 sheep, and 7,324 cattle preserved last season : 2,590,216 were returned by the sheepholders of Otago, on the ,30th September last, and 079,939 in the, Southland district, giving a total of 3,270,155 for the entire province or an increase of 117,407 [upon last season. Considering the number preserved, as above,-this appears a very satisfactory increase,
