CRICKET. WANGANUI v. MARTON.

The Wanganui team, driven by Gordon, four in hand, left Wanganui yesterday morning about seven o'clock, and reached Marton shortly after 12 o'clock, where they were received by some of their opponents. After having partaken of a sandwich, at onco adjourned to the field. Marton went first to the wickets, and by dint of good play made the large score of 149, of which Beaufort made 46 and Rose 23. Byes and wides contributed no less than 59, which may be accounted for from the ground which, certainly was not very good. Wangann followed and only succeeded in making 39, of which Witchell made 14. It became evident to all that the Wanganui team would, for the fiist time, get what was much wanted—a good beating. No time was lost, the town eleven followed their innings, but only man : aged to score 29 ; the Marton club thus won in one inuings by 81 runs. We might mention that only 10 men played on the losing side, Mr John Notman having met with an accident—a fall and kick from his horse. A sumptuous dinner was provided by the Martonians for their visitors at Howe's Hotel, Dr Tyreman presiding, the vice-chair bemq; occupied by Mr Retemeyer. The usual toasts were given and responded to, and it being understood that the Wancanui men were anxious to start for town, the pleasant party broke up much earlier than was intended.
