The Evening Herald. SATURDAY, NOV. 28, 1868.

? first unequivocal success of the preseht^war was obtained yesterday. The cavalry, after having made an expedition to Wairoa, and found the garrison there all well, were returning to camp, when they noticed a number 6{ ,Maoris in the open ground at Niikumaru, l and, charging, down upon them, killed 8. The Maoris will be exceedingly cautious how they move about in isolated parties after the affair of yesterday. The whereabouts of the enemy having been ascertained, it will be for Col. Whitmore to take up a position as near to him as possible, leaving bushrangers and cavalry to cut off detached parties. The enemy has a wholesome dread of cavalry, which will now be considerably increased. Colonel Whitmore can place in the field 100 sabres, and these would be capable of guarding the settled districts, while he pressed upon the main body of the enemy, giving him no rest. The force stationed at Turakina should immediately rejoin the main body, as it is of no service where it is, and not likely to be of any. The inspiring effect that a victory, however small, will have upon our men at the present time might be.turned to good account. The first company of bushrangers, under Lieut. Clery, has been or- • ganised, and is ready, to start for the Front. Other companies will shortly be raised,- and the measures being initiated by the present commander, of the militia and volunteers, ** we may feel a greater sense of security about the sertled , districts With o combined effort. T'itokowam may be driven across the Patea in less.than a month. The eyes of all the natives in the island-are upon . the movements oh this coast, and peace, generally, depends upon our s \£Jnlitsr to cope, with Titokowaru.

Expected /Arrival of Arms.—-By H.M. Steam-ram Blanche, the Government expect a quantity of improved arms, of the newest pattern, and also a quantity

of ammunition

Appointments.—*-Wm. Finnimore has been gazetted Captain, and Thos. Harper Lieutenant, of the Wanganui Cavalry Volunteers. Sub-Inspector John Mclntosh Roberts has been promoted to the rank of Inspector in the Armed Constabulary. Date of commission 15th November 1868.

Capture.—The Maori who attempted to take the life of the Dane, near Otaki, has been given up, and sent to Wellington for trial. The motive for the crime was robbery. The natives have behaved loyally in the matter. The wounded man is likely to recover.

Man Missing.—We are sorry to learn that Mr. E. Craske, a settler residing just above Aramobo pa, is missing. He and his brother had been staying in town for some days, and he went home on Thursday morning, leaving his brother to follow yesterday. On the brother's arrival, he found the door open, and the missing gentleman's coat, hat, and knife lying on the table beside some cut tobacco^ but no fire lighted, and no sign of his brother. As, however, he supposed the latter to be somewhere outside, he felt no alarm till later in the day, when, frpm his not appearing, enquiries were made of the neighbours, who, however, had not seen him. A search was made for him all last evening and night but without success, and to-day enquiries equally in vain have been made in town. It appears that on Thursday afternoon a neighbour went to the house and found everything just as it appeared on the brother's arrival yesterday, (except that the fire was then alight,) but saw nothing of the missing gentleman.
