TURAKINA.

[from our correspondent.]

Tuesday

" Here we are again." If no news is good news we certainly have no reason to (bmplain, for during the last two month 6 there has hem a (earful dearth of that com-

modify so essentially neces.-}-? toThe vitality ot small cmmur.ities hke ours. Trade has not much improved, nor, indeed, can we expect that it will do so for at least a couple of months. Money very scarce, and both pakeba and Maori seem to be unusually careful in their speculations, whether arising from limited means or the study of Baxter, lam unable to decide. Nevertheless, the various new and commodious business premises popping up here and there would lead us to the belief that their respective founders are taking the full benefit of the doubt, which Dr. Cumming embraced so eagerly. Conspicuous among j these stands Beilve's Family Restaurant, a' commodious three-story building just approaching completion, and which wou'd certainly be a credit to. any town in the province. The enterprising owner has supplied a want long felt in the district, and most deservedly will merit that success which his effort* to promote the comfort of his guests have gained lor him in other places. The-erection of ORiley's Concert Hall goes on apace, as also of the billiardroom and tobacconist's shop which he has attached to his hotel. The Assembly Hall is not yet begun, but the share-list is nearly filled up, and tenders are now out for plans. I have no doubt it will prove a great benefit to the settler*, and also remunerative to the shareholders. You see wrfe are determined not to let you in Wanganui have all the amusements to yourselves, at least if suitable accommodation will induce troupes or companies to pay us a vis-it. Tbe temperance movement is progressing slowly but surely, and even now, in this early stage of existence, has been productive of much good. The opinions of many are changing in reference to it, and soipe' who not long since ridiculed it and ;ts devotees, are now its staunch supporters. We certainly owe a vote of thanks to the Rev. Mr. Harding and Mr. Cunnabel, who spent an evening mt long since in giving us interesting accounis of the movement in various parts ot the world, and to which the latter gentleman added a history of the rise and progress of the Order of" Templars, which he has promised to institute among us at an early date. Mr. Huist, the partner in the late firm ot Franklin and Hurst, has this week begun premises in which to carry on the butchering business. There are no doubt* of his ultimate success, for independently of his extensive circle of friends and supporters, his general knowledge of the business in all its branches {anatomy in particular), is generally allowed to be such as has not yet been exhibited in Turakina.
