The Evening Herald. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 1867.

Thtc Wesleyan Bazvar.—Tt is rather unfortunate for the bazaar that the weather should have turned out unfavorable ; we believe, however, that the committee intend keeping it open for another day in consequence. The proceeds of yesterday, including the amount taken, at the door and sales amounted to £150, which is not at all bad for one day. "We noticed that the goods, which have been imported direct from London, are all first-class in quality and are exceedingly moderate in price. Literary Society.—ln consequence of the Odd Fellows' Hall being engaged for some time by the Nathan Troupe, the debate on the question "Have the Inferior Animnls "Reason ?" is postponed to Monday, the, 2nd September.

The Nathan Troupe.—The Nathan Troupe performed again la=t nieht. The programme was the same a« the night previpns. To-night there wil] be an entire change of programme. " Cfdadad or the disguised Prince" will be played for the first time.

Mr. Watt moved in the House, on Thursday—" That a return of the confiscated land between the Waitotara and New Plymouth, with the boundaries of the same; also what steps have been taken by the Government to secure permanent peace with the natives in the said district, he laid upon the tahle of this House." The return was ordered.

Mr. Reynoixs' Latkst.—We quote the following from the Independent: —"Mr Reynold?, whore eccentricities furnish v constant source of amusement to the House, and which hHve the more serious effect of cousin? his remarks, that are, often very sensible to he generally disregarded, ea<e the following notice of motion :—' That it is expedient, during the remainder of the session, that the Government should bo regarded as r sub committee of the whole House, and that there should be no Minis terial questions. 1' Of course, the absurdity of the thins caused a general laugh, but the feeling speedily save way ti one of indignation that the proceedings of the Hou.«e should he made the subject of a jest, and the' Speaker put it to the House whether the notice should be received or not. Mr, C. Wilson, and Mr. Tmvere took occasion, under the. guise of sppaking to the point of order, to fldminister severe reproofs to the lack'ess member i"nr the city of Dunedin, nnd wore duty rebuked in their tern by Mr. Voeel, for having taken upon themselves to discharge a duty belonging to the Speaker."

THK DIVfSION ON THK LoCAL GoVKRNMRNT Bill.—All the members of the House of Rppre«entatiree, with the excfption of two, took part in the division of Friday

morning.. The House consists, vehen all the seats are filled up, of seventy members : but the seats for the Pensioner Sett'ements and the Ashley Districts are vacant, and the Speaker must also be deducted from the number of members capable of voting on a division.

Thk Provincial Question. —The Independent, August 10, says Mr. Travers ha? given, notice thai he will move on Werinee(jay next : —" That in ihe opinion of this House it is desirable that for the future the entire legislative and executive control over the following departments of Government in the colony; namely, police, eaols, hospiia's, lonatic asylums, and harbors, should he vested in the General Government, but with authority to delegate the administration of those departments to the Superintendent? and executive Councils of the various Provinces ; but that the entire lesislative and executive control over the ordinary colonizing functions of Government, including the department of provincial public works, should remain with the Provincial Govern, merits."

The Advertiser say.« : —" It is understood that Captain Thompson, of the s s. Ransatira, will succeed Captain Renner in command of the s.s. WeMmefon, and that Mr. Seymour, now chief officer of the s.s. Taranaki, and formerly in command of the Rangatira, will succeed Captain Thompson."

The Hokilika Chronicle, of the 28th ult., states that a demand has gpiung up in Melbourne for supplejack. Wby should this not form a branch of the local industry at Hokitika ? Captains of vessels leaving that port in ballasr would only be too glad to take a return cargo at litile more than, nominal rates. The price given is xava £6 to £8 per ton.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Poole left Wellington la»t Thursday, by' the s.s. Rakaia, en route for California.
