THE LYELL MINES.

(ttjies.) Cn<E3U3. —Extending level along the line of reef, which at present is small, although the walls are about three feet apart; but a bar of slate and pug between the foot wall and the reef causes the latter to remain very narrow. The winze, which was discontinued last week, had been sunk eight feet, when the water came in so fast that the hands found it impossible to cope with it, and the sinking was therefore abandoned. Tenders are now called for a No. 2 level, which will be taken in a distance of 400 feet. A rise will then be constructed, and the mine thoroughly opened up for breaking down quartz. The reef maintains an average of 35 . feet in thickness. The contractors for 1 No. G level, Messrs M'Neil and Co., j have disposed of their right in the cong tract to Messrs Bray and party. The level is in about 00 feet from where the

The race is just completed, and the contractors have now only to give the finishing stroke to the battery. The work of erecting battery, water-wheel, &c , has been carried out in a very efficient manner. Crushing will be commenced in about three weeks. United Victory.— Eising for the winze was commenced on Tuesday. A distance of 70 feet will require to be driven before tapping the winze. This will be accomplished in about seven weeks. The rise will then be taken from No. 1 tunnel to the surface, and the mine otherwise opened up. The Company will scarcely be in a position to commence crushing inside of three months.
