MELBOURNE. January 19. A serious fire at Sandridge destroyed several large wooden buildings. The heat here is now intense, the thermometer registering 107 in thp shade. Another passenger per Garonne steamer, a female, died of small-pox yesterday. The P. and O. steamer Mirdapore arrived at Albany yesterday with two passengers suffering from small-pox. She has been quarantined. January 20. The funeral of James flenty, at Kew, was largely attended. He died of apoplexy. The south channel at Port Philip Heads is to be deepened, so as large steamers will find no difficulty in entering. The Committee of the Melbourne Hospital report that JDr Miller's assertion thut the Hospital is saturated with erysipelas is exaggerated, but an enquiry will be held as to the sanitary condition of the building. The (i-aronne's passengers are to be released in a few days. The thermometer in Adelaide has registered 180 in the shade. A seaman of the schooner Zephyr, from Greymouth, named Barry, missed his hold aloft and fell on deck, dying instantaneously. SYDNEY. January 19. Sailed—Hero for Auckland. Rear Admiral and 193 officers and men of the Wolverine sail on Friday for England in the steamer Lusitania.
