—,— (CABLED TO AUSTRALIAN PAPERS AND TELEGRAPHED FROM BLUEF.) LONDON. A gunboat employed in guarding the coast of County Mayo, Ireland, was attacked by a party of armed men, who fired upon it. They were repulsed by the crew, and the ringleaders have been arrested. Intelligence has been received from India of a rising among the lawless Afghan tribes in the vicinity of Bo!an Pass, Southern Afghanistan. They attacked some posts maintained there. The British troops, which have been withdrawn towards Quettah, are marching to their relief. During the p»st year the debt of the United States has increased by £12,500,000. For some years previously the debt, which stands at about £4-20,000,000, has been steadily decreasing. The well-known firm, Charriot and Co, of Bordeaux, has been declared bankrupt; the liabilities being estimatedat thelargeamountof 15,000000 francs (£625,000). In consequence of some of the surrounding circumstances, it is probable that legal proceedings will be taken. The nomadic inhabitants of the extensive region in Central Asia, situated between Orenburg and EasternTurkes tan, which was recently recaptured by the Chinese, have risen in revolt, in con sequence of the ill-treatment to which they have been subjected. They have massacred the people in a number of Chinese villages, committing fearful atrocities. Troops were despatched against them, but were attacked and defeated. The rebellion is assuming serious proportions. For some time past the subject of a British representative at the Vatican has been under consideration Recently Mr Errington was despatched as an informal envoy to confer on certain points, and a strong desire was expressed on the part of the Vatican that a permanent representative of Great Britain should be appointed. The electric light has been intro duced into Vienna for the purpose of light the principal streets. A portion of the city has been thus illuminated, and result is considered so satisfactory that probably the system will be exextended. Strong symptoms of renewal of re publican feeling are very mauifest in Spain. At Madrid great excitement has been caused by the issue ot a republican manifesto calling upon the parish people to expel the Royal Family, and follow the example of France in establishing a republic. At a festival held by Communists in Paris in celebration of Blanquien, one of their old leaders, serious rioting took place owing to the intervention of the police. The mob was extremely disorderly, aud the police, who were attacked, fired upon the crowd. Twenty persons were injured.
