The Westport Times TUESDAY, JAN 17, 1882.

The settlers at Karamea make; strong complaint of the manner in which they are treated in respect to communication -with the outside world. They lately represented the matter to the Postal authorities, through the member for the district, and the following reply has been received :—" "Wellington, 10th January, 1882. Sir,—l am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your communication, dated 31st ult., covering a letter from the settlers at Karamea, relative to the mail service to that place. Will you please inform the settlers that their representations shall have immediate attention, and that the contractors have been communicated with, asking that they hereafter give the residents at Karamea reasonable notice of the days on which the steamer will visit them, and, if possible, make such arrangements as will permit of the vessel remaining over one tide.—l have the honor to be, sir, your obedient servant, W. Gray, Secretary. Jno. Munro, Esq., M.H.R., Westport." The concessions, slight in themselves, indicated in the above letter, will be very convenient to the settlers. Mr Stitt (the Karamea representative in the County Council) has also obtained the promise, from the Hon. Mr llolleston, of further benefit for the Settlement. At the County Council ii terview with the Minister at Charleston, Mr Stitt, assisted by the member for the district, drew attention to the necessity for constructing the Karamea-Motueka inland road. The Minister fully concurred in the proposal, and stated that the Government recognised the necessity of opening up the land between Collingwood, Motueka, and the seaboard at Karamea. It was urged by the deputation that tile present track should he completed to the Gorge at once, as it was known that payable gold was to be found there. In reply Mr Rolleston stated that not only that portion, but also it was the intention of the Government to complete the road right through to Collingwood. Not a dray road, but a good substantial pack track would be. made, so that settlers could ride through from Karamea to Collingwood.
