The Mary Wadley is also expected to arrive from Napier shortly. The s.s. Merksworth, Captain Charles Fraser, arrived from Port Chalmers ou Monday at 4 p.m. The Merksworth left here at 8 a.m. last Monday (2nd January) with 221 tons of coal for Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Arrived at Oamaru at II p.m. on Wednesday, 4th, discharged 70 tons of coal, sailed again and arrived in Port Chalmers at 7 p.m. next night. On Friday, 6th, discharged the remainder of the coal, about 120 tons, and left at 11 o'clock the same night for Westport, arriving as above. The passage was made in 64 hours 40 minutes to Westport jetty. Variable winds and moderate weather were experienced until Monday, when it blew hard from W.S.W., with heavy head sea. Passed the Company's s.s. Ladybird about 12 miles north of the bar, going at a rapid rate through the water, with a full head of steam on and all possible sail set. The Merksworth brought one collier to work at the mine. The Greymouth morning paper of Monday prints this insinuatory paragraph : '' From a telegram received yesterday we learn that the Grafton went on to Nelson, after leaving here on Saturday, without calling at Westport, as had been intended. It was not stated whether this was caused by a bad bar or not." We hasten to allay the fears of the Argus : the passing of this port by the Grafton was not caused by a bad bar. At Port Chalmers, the master of the brig Star of the Mersey, from Newcastle, with coals, was charged by the Customs' officer with loading her 4iin. below Plimsoll's mark. The Bench held that the mark had been put in the wrong place, and while the letter of the Act was broken it was not broken in spirit. The master was fined only Is, with 7s costs. A bottle was found on Sunday last on Waikouati beach, about 30 miles from Dunedin, containing scraps of paper, on which was written in led pencil, '' Tuesday, December 27th, 1881. Please send assistance as soon as possible. Shipwreck about 80 miles off Cape Saunders. God help us, Crptain. Whoever finds this let him send to head quarters." As no names are given in may turn ou a hoax.
