THE MELBOURNE RACES.

The second and principal day's racing of the Victorian Eacing Club took place on the 4th inst., and we subjoin the results of the most interesting races of that and the following days. As we had previously known by telegram, Manuka, the New Zealand champion horse, was scratched; but though the fact is referred to in the files to hand, we have not been able to find the specific reason for his being scratched or the time at which it took place. Mr Redwood's Peeress won one race only, but was unsuccessful otherwise, and the success of his other mare—Misfortune—was in keeping with her name:— Maiden Plate.—A sweepstakes of 5 soys. each, with 150 sovs. added. One mile and a half. Partisan, 3 yrs., 7 st 1 Cceur de Lion, 3 yrs., 7 st 2 Detective, 3 yrs., 7 st 3 Mischief, Moonbeam, Brown Bess, Gasometer, Orlando, Peeping Tom, and Pride also started. "Won by three quarters af a length. Railway Stakes.—A sweepstakes of 5 sovs each, with 100 sovs. added. One mile and a quarter. The Baron, 4 yrs., 8 st 11 lb 1 Glencoe, 5 yrs., 10 st., (including 14 lbs. extra.) 2 Misfortune, 4 yrs., Bst 9 lb. ... ... 3 "Won by a head. Misfortune beaten off.

Melboubne Cup.—A Sweepstakes of 20. sovs. each, 10., or five if declared, with 300 sova. added. The winner of any handicap of the value of 100 sovs., after the declaration of the weights, to carry 3 lb extra j if two or more such races, 5 lb extra. The second horse to receive 50 govs., and the third to save his stakes. Two miles. Warrior, 6 yrs., 8 st. 10 lb 1 The Monk, 5 yrs., 7 Bt 2 Phoebe, C yrs., 7 st. 10 lb 3 Betting— 2to 1 agst Circassian, 5 and 6 to 1 agst Traverton, 6 to 1 agst Sheet Anchor, 8 to 1 agst Warrior, 10 to 1 each agst Charon, Salem Scudder, and Strop, 15 to 1 agst Aurora, 20 to 1 each agst Albany and Phoebe, 30 to 1 agst Paddy's Land, 33 to 1 each agst Norma, Cymba, Barbelle, and Australian, 50 to 1 agst Polo, and 200 to 1 agst the Monk. Warrior, in front of everything when the flag dropped, cut out the running for a quarter of a mile, when he was joined on the outside by Sheet Anchor, Bishopsbourne being on hisleft,Traverton and Circassian figuring conspicuously amongst the next half dozen. Approaching the carriagepaddock, Morrison took a slight pull at his horse, and Bishopsbourne, Sheet Anchor, and Traverton led the field past the stand, Palmerston, who ran off the course at starting and thereby lost at least 50 yards, bringing up the rear. Bounding the turn Bishopsbourne held an advantage of about a length over the ruck, which was headed by Traverton, Warrior going well within himself, Strop, Phoebe, The Monk, and Circassian closing up as they neared the spot where the old stand once stood ; Sheet Anchor, Bishopsbourne, Salem Scudder, and several others fell back beaten. In the next hundred yards Circassian made his run, but the effort proved a fruitless one, and Morrison taking advantage of an opening, brought Warrior to the head of affairs ; and from this point the race was never in doubt, for though the Monk came with a rush in the straight and got on terms with Warrior, it was on sufferance only, for upon Morrison shaking his horse up, he shot ahead without any perceptible effort, and coming on at his own pace won easily by a couple of lengths, the Monk second, Phoebe a good third, Sir John fourth, Freetrader fifth, and Palmerston, who made up a great deal of ground in the last half mile, sixth • Paddy's Land galloping home next without his rider, and Strop, Circassion, Albany, Charon, and Aurora finishing all of a heap. Time, 3m. 40s. Hubdle Race.—A handicap of 5 sovs. each, ■with 100 sovs. added. About three miles. The favorite was the first to show in advance, with Saladin second, and Peeress, who got away badly, in the rear, no alteration taking place until the carriage paddock was reached, when the New Zealand mare shot to the front, and carried on the running past the stand and round the turn by the river. Morrison soon began to ride G-lencoe in earnest, but his efforts proved of no avail, and, falling further and further in the rear, he stopped his horse at the abattoirs, Peeress galloping home an easy winner more than twenty lengths ahead of Saladin, who from first to last had no show whatever. Monday, the Bth, was the settling day, of which the Argus says : —" Long before noon Kirk's Bazaar was invaded by a curious crowd, which had evidently assembled for no other purpose than to watch the ceremony of paying and receiving which commenced about twelve o'clock, and continued without intermission until three o'clock. As usual on such occasions, there were several absentees, but considering the large amount of speculation that has taken place over the meeting, the settling was of a satisfactory nature. Mr Saqui is the only winner to any great extent, he having backed his horse in various ways to win him a good stake; and several other members of the ring pulled through in a manner that was highly satisfactory to themselves. A well-known sporting member of the medical profession is said to have landed between £I2OO and £ISOO by the victories of "Warrior and Eeindeer. The success of the latter horse was a severe blow to the ring, but the defeat of the favorites in the V.B.C. Handicap and Tree Handicap amply compensated for the losses sustained on the Steeplechase. Books on the Ballarat handicaps were opened, picking the double event being the popular fancy of the public; but the Sydney St. Ledger and Gold Cup were the events which attracted the principal share of attention, and some thousands of pounds were entered in the books of the members of the ring. The tone of the betting may be taken from the following wagers that came under our notice:—soo to 10 and 500 to 15 against Charon and Charon, 500 to 10 (to some thousands) against Charon and Tim Whiffler, 500 to 10 Charon and Antelope, 500 to 10 Charon and Barbarian, 500 to 10 Charon and Traverton, 500 to 10 and 500 to 15 Barbarian and Barbarian, 500 to 10 Barbarian and Traverton, 500 to 10 Barbarian and Charon, 500 to 10 Barbarian andTimWhiffler, 500 to 10 and 500 to 15 Lamplighter and Lamplighter, 500 to 10 Lamplighter and Italian, 500 to 10 Lamplighter and Charon, 500 to 10 Detective and Tim Whiffler, and 560 to 10 Detective and Detective. Detective was backed for next year's Melbourne Cup at 1000 to 20, and Monk at 1000 to 25. In the evening the remaining of the settling was gone through at the Subscription-room, where the stakes won at the meeting were paid over. Messrs Fisher and Saqui " stood " the usual quantity of No 2, and everything passed off harmoniously. The following is a complete list of the lucky recipients of the stakes, which amounted to a sum total of £s62o:—Mr H. Fisher, £1427; Mr A. Saqui, £1402 ; Mr J. Henty, £360 ; Mr E. Lee, £305 ; Mr J.
