A COMPLAINT FROM ROCHFORT TERRACE.

(To the Editor of tlie Westport Times.) Sir, —It is with no small amount of hesitation we complain of the decision of the Warden last week, in the case of "Wilson and party and Meese and party, in giving them amalgamation. But as it involves a principle of the utmost importance to all connected with these terraces, we feel in duty bound to express our disapproval and condemnation of such a verdict in such a case. Some months ago, Alton and party, which then only numbered four, applied for an amalgamation with the Boatman's party and extension of ground. It was then adduced by "Wilson and party as their principal grounds of objection, that four men were quite sufficient to put a tunnel into the ground, and they asserted their willingness to do so, as they were only four, and the "Warden supported their objection, and shortly afterwards protected them Wilson and party along with Meese and party to pub in a tunnel conjointly. The Warden, at the same time, told them they need never expect to get amalgamation for the purpose of working their ground, and, we believe, a note to that effect was made on the certificate of registration. About the same time Barrowman and party had an opportunity of getting more ground. But, taking the Warden's decision in cases similar at Giles Terrace, and, in fact, taking the emphatic denial of the Warden in this particular case of Wilson and party, they considered they had no earthly chance of even getting it, if the Warden was a man of his word. It might be asked, why did not anybody object to the granting of it at the time. Our answer is that, seeing notices posted in the Wardens office on the same subject and, taking

the Warden at his word in this particular case, it would have showed a great waut of confidence in the veracity of the Warden to have appeared in objection to a thing that the Warden had pledged his word not to give. We believe it has been represented to the Warden that they had extraordinary difficulties to encounter. Other parties had the same difficulties to encounter as they necessarily had, and any of us would willingly have done a month or six weeks extra work if we could have got three or four extra men's ground without requiring to have it represented by wages men. We don't object to the amount of ground they now hold, but the style it has been effected in is prejudicial to the realization of justice between man and man.—We remain yours, &c,

(To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sie, —A letter appearing in your columns of the 16th instant, headed " The Shamrock Lead," and mentioning names in connection with facts incorrect in some particulars, naturally gives offence to some of those concerned. On behalf of the Thistle Gold Mining Company (in which I am a shareholder) I beg to state that the two men's ground belonging to Messrs Peters and Eodgers, situated on the Shamrock Lead, does not constitute any portion, part, or parcel of the Thistle Gold Mining Company's lease whatever.

Having been asked in a friendly manner if I was the author of the said letter, I beg leave to state that I know nothing of its origin or its writer; and also that, to whatever I consider worthy of publication, I shall not be ashamed to attach my name in full. Apologizing for occupying so much of your valuable time and columns.—l remain yours, &c., George Boss.
