The collectors appointed at tlie meeting of the Jockey Club on Tuesday evening commenced their canvass yesterday for subscriptions for the Christmas races, and were, in the course of the forenoon, successful enough to receive in cash J270, a b'st of the subscribers of which is published in another column. As only half of the townspeople have as yet been canvassed for subscriptions, and as the Jockey Club had uoariy ,£IOO in hand previous to the receipt of any subscriptions, there can be little doubt that the races this year will even surpass anything yet held in the southern part of the Nelson Province. .'Last year the use of the race-course, with labor in clearing, levelling, &c, cost over £io. This year, it is to bo hoped, there will be a bettor race-course, and at no loss to the race fund. We understand it is the intention of the Jockey Club, should there be sufficient funds after the conclusion of two days' racing, to hold land sports in the town for a day. This will depend upon the amount of subscriptions received, and it is to be hoped that, during the next two or three weeks, funds will be obtained sufficient to lay before the public a liberal programme of races and list of sports. A rush to Ruby Lead, Hatter's Terrace, has set in since the first gold was got on Monday last, and a number of claims have been marked off. The election of a member of the County Council for Hokitika was to take place on Tuesday. As all the candidates had withdrawn with the exception of Mr Jehu White, there is no doubt that he has been returned. Another mining accident, by which a miner named John Rooney was killed in Liverpool's Gully, New River, is reported by tho Grey River Argus. It appears that deceased, along with his mate, John

Johnston, was engaged cutting a tailrace in the bed of Liverpool's creek; two other mates, named Michael Henry and Hugh Fitzsimmons, were on the terrace falling timber, when Henry sang out to deceased and Johnston to get out of the way, as a tree was coming down. They did not immediately clear out, not thinking the tree was so close to them, when the tree came down and fell on the top of Rooney. Johnston immediately called his mates, and got him out of the tail-race and carried him to his tent, where he died about two hours afterwards.
