THE HOSPITAL.
(To the Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston Argus.) Sir, —I am surprised to see that, after all that has been said on Hospital matters, the Committee continue to persist in talcing " effect for cause," and in blaming the anonymous writer for causing ill-feeling when they themselves are not free from blame. When a ministerial change takes place 1 believe the successors carry out all the agreements entered into by their predecessors, else there would be nothing but confusion and bickering. Why an Hospital Committee should not do the same thing does not appear ; and, by not doing so, they are the cause of all the noise, and the letters are but the effect of the cause. Sir, I labour under the impression that any guinea subscriber could bring a conviction home to the collector of subscriptions, under the " statute of frauds " for obtaining money under false pretenses, which is certainly not a very pleasant reflection for them. When such is the case no wonder that the misconception is so general. I can well understand the unenviable position of the Doctor, who is reported to be the right man in the righb place. I should like to see the committee able to remunerate him better than is the case at present. The card that Mr Adams handed to the steward belonged to a subscriber simply because it belonged to himself, and the gentleman who received the subscription informs me he will at once hand it over to the treasurer of the ex-local committee, who will forward it to town, where it may perhaps lay a month or two as former subscriptions > have, before it may come to the knowledge of the steward that he is a subscriber.
lii conclusion, I hope the Coinmitee will reconsider their bye-laws and make thern more in accordance with the conditions under which the subscriptions were obtained, or many staunch friends will desert the institution which is so necessary to a mining community.—l am, Sir, Tours, &c, A SUBSCRIBER.
