HOSPITAL MEETING.

{To the Editor of tlw Westport Times and Charleston Argus) Sie—Your correspondent signing himself a " Subscriber" inyourissueof this morning, seems to come of that class commonly called " putters down." Without at all reflecting on his subject, he commences by trying to prove that "Westport does not belong to the mining community, and proceeds by ignoring the fact that the Government, before the late movement, had to entirely support the Hospital, and forgets to show in what respect the Hospital is more useful than it was before the committee was appointed, and that the subscribers paid their guinea on conditions, that they should have a bed at the Hospital should they requireone. Now, Sir, why was Adams, about ten days ago, with a guinea ticket in his hand, refused admittance into the Hospital, unless he would promise to pay £5 for having his shoulder put in, and ten shillings for every day he remained in the Hospital ? a man without money, but who has passed his word to pay as soon as he can, and who considers himself bound by his word. If the object of charging patients is solely Tor the purpose of testing who are qualified, I consider it a, very bad test indeed, and the sooner done away with the better, (for any unscrupulous man can make such a test), and one substituted that is found to work well, whereever tried, namely, by a reference from a reliable party acquainted with the person seeking admission. Tour correspondent seems to have some authority in Hospital management, without the necessary qualification of trying to make the institution useful, and conducted according to the desire of the subscribers generally, they have the consolation of knowing what to do when they are again asked to subscribe, unless the Westport Hospital is made what it was intended to be — an asylum and a preventor of sickness. I am, Sir, A Subscribes.
